 Armenia is a republic in western Asia, bordered by Georgia on the north, Azerbaijan on the east and the Azerbaijani exclave of Naxçývan (Nakhichevan') on the southwest, Iran on the south, and Turkey on the west. With Georgia and Azerbaijan, Armenia is located in Transcaucasia (the southern portion of the region of Caucasia), which occupies part of the isthmus between the Black and Caspian seas. Yerevan is the capital and largest city.
In Armenian, the official state language, Armenia is named Hayastan. Incorporated as a part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) in 1922, Armenia became independent in 1991. Its first post-Soviet constitution was adopted in 1995.
Armenia occupies about 29,800 sq km (about 11,500 sq mi)
