HISTORY:
Founded as Aerolinee Italiane Internazionali, but more commonly known as Alitalia. On 31 October 1957, Alitalia merged with Linee Aeree Italiane and took on the name of Alitalia Linee Aeree. Set up Societa Aerea Mediterranea (SAM) in November 1960 as a charter subsidiary and Aero Trasporti Italiani (ATI) in December 1963 to handle domestic flights. Charter Company Aermediterranea was founded in 1981, SAM has since been closed down, while ATI was incorporated into the mainline operations in November 1994.
